Details and Safety Information: 2025 Cebu Earthquake

Seismic & Fault Details

The earthquake occurred on September 30, 2025, at 9:59:43 PM (PHT), with a magnitude of 6.9 Mw. Its epicenter was located northeast off the coast of Bogo City, Cebu. The shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers intensified the surface shaking, increasing structural damage.

PHIVOLCS identified the cause as the newly mapped Bogo Bay Fault, which generated surface ruptures across northern Cebu. More than 9,000 aftershocks were recorded within the first week, with the strongest reaching Magnitude 5.1.

Affected Areas & Structural Damage

Bogo City sustained the heaviest damage, with homes, schools, and government offices collapsing. The quake also damaged key infrastructure in San Remigio, Daanbantayan, Medellin, and Tabuelan. In Daanbantayan, the 139-year-old Shrine of Santa Rosa de Lima partially collapsed.

Landslides occurred in upland areas, killing at least 14 people. Coastal regions near Bogo and San Remigio also experienced minor subsidence and flooding.

Casualties & Displacement

The disaster claimed 72 lives and injured over 300 individuals. Thousands of families were displaced, with many seeking shelter in temporary evacuation centers managed by local governments and the Philippine Red Cross.

Rescue & Relief Operations

Emergency teams from NDRRMC, PHIVOLCS, LGUs, and the Red Cross immediately conducted search and rescue operations. Medical tents and mobile hospitals were established to treat the injured. Power, communication, and transport systems are being gradually restored.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Coast Guard assisted in logistics and relief efforts, while the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) distributed food packs and clean water to affected barangays.
